International registrants should be particularly aware and careful about visa requirements, and should plan travel well in advance.
Do you need a visa?
Nationals of many countries, including those of the European Union, the United States of America, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea and Switzerland, do NOT require a visa for business travel to Portugal for three months or less. Nationals from various other countries, such as China, India, and South Africa do require a visa. The Portuguese Tourism Office website has information whether you need a visa and how to obtain one if you plan to travel to Portugal.
If your government requires proof of international medical insurance for the period of your stay in Portugal, most insurance companies will offer such coverage at a reasonable premium. Please check with your local insurance company to be sure.
Requesting a Visa Support Letter
If you do require a visa, in some cases you may also need a visa support letter. After completing your registration and payment you can email a request for a visa support letter to the local arrangements chair. Be sure to include your name as it appears on your passport in the email. The visa support letter will be sent to you after we verify that you completed your registration and after we have received your payment. Please be aware that visa support letters will state only the following facts:
- Conference title, dates and location
- Passport name of the requester
- That the requester has paid the required registration fee in full
- The title of the accepted submission of the requester, if any
Please allow up to 3 weeks for the receipt of the visa support letter. Please bear in mind that the visa application procedure may last up to two months in case further research is required! Please also note that ACM does not issue formal “letters of invitation” to any of its conferences.
